I remember the days of agonizing over the first paragraph, thinking it had to be perfect before I could write the rest of the paper. What a trap that was! 😅 It led to so much unnecessary stress and writer's block. Then, a wise mentor gave me the best advice of my academic life: skip it.

Here’s my positive strategy that I hope helps someone out there:
Instead of forcing the intro first, I jump straight into the body paragraphs where I actually discuss my evidence and analysis. Once the entire paper is written and I fully understand the scope of my argument, I circle back to write the introduction. It’s like putting together a puzzle; it’s way easier to build the frame (intro) when you can already see the whole picture! 🧩

Now, my introductions write themselves in 20 minutes, and they actually match the paper! Give it a try and let me know if it works for you. What’s your biggest struggle—the hook, the thesis statement, or just getting started? Let’s discuss!

The "perfect first paragraph" obsession is literally why so many students hate writing. They think they need to know exactly what they're going to say before they've said it—which is backwards!

Your mentor's advice is solid. Writing is thinking. You don't know your argument until you've made it. The intro is just the trailer for a movie you haven't finished filming yet. 🎬

I'd add one tip: write a "placeholder intro" first—just one sentence summarizing what you THINK you're arguing. Then forget it exists. Write the body. Come back. Nine times out of ten, your actual argument is way more interesting than what you started with.
